President-elect Donald Trump has quite a history with the controversial topic of climate change. From trivializing this pressing issue down to a mere can of hairspray to blaming China for making it up, Trump has made it clear that he thinks global warming is all just a big scam.
Now with the possibility of moving backwards from all the progress we have made in reducing our carbon footprint, American businesses are joining together to tell Trump that they are committed to fighting global warming. Nike, Gap, L’Oreal, and Starbucks are just a few of the 300 brands who signed an opened letter to urge the future president to maintain the current low-carbon policies championed by Obama. "We want the US economy to be energy efficient and powered by low-carbon energy," the letter states, adding "failure to build a low-carbon economy puts American prosperity at risk." Trump’s climate change stance cannot and will not interfere with the healing that has long been due for our planet. Let’s continue to be conscious and aware of our choices, keeping in mind that our environmental footprints are present even in the most commonplace of our lives. http://money.cnn.com/2016/11/16/news/businesses-trump-climate-change/index.html?sr=fbCNN111816businesses-trump-climate-change0155PMVODtopLink&linkId=31310029

We oftentimes fail to allocate the time and efforts to look deeper into the issue of climate change. It seems to me that the media tends to focus on short-lived, superficial stories that promise them high ratings and large followings. The fact that our president-elect outright denies the existence of climate change leaves not us to fear not only the fate of our global environment for years to come, but it also leaves us troubled on how our future generations will be affected. It is extremely important that people who are privileged with great public platforms and large followings utilize their "microphones" to convey positive and important ideas to the public. I commend all the brands that have used their platforms to advocate for positive change. We all possess the right to freedom of speech, and there are so many different capacities in which that right can manifest itself. We have the power to convey such an important message to our president-elect, so hopefully, he can act wisely as our future executive leader.

We will have to keep a very close eye on this issue as Trump makes his way into office. I believe as a whole, our nation (and hopefully the world) are moving to an understanding that climate change is real and that environmental sustainability practices are valuable in the short and long term. Those who reap the benefits of harmful production practices will try to reverse the narrative. We must remain vigilant!
